Happy Belated 71st Birthday Chuck. I had the honor and privilege to meet this man along with Philip Pearlstein. Two artists of the history books, both have shaped representation in their own rights to what it is today: history has a lot to thank these artists for and look up to them for endeavors and paths they created for artists.

This photo was taken 3 years ago (crazy how old I'm getting now) at the Mandarin Oriental, New York at the Celebration Dinner for the National Portfolio Gold Winners. It was one of the proudest moments of my life and was a time where I felt like at age 18, I achieved my own self-actualization on the high school level. To have worked for fours years straight and to achieve my goals and aspirations then and be recognized alongside 4 other senior artists in the nation was a moment I will never forget and will always cherish. It was an emotion of personal success to have had my work be recognized by jurors which consisted of museum curators, professional artists and critics and is a main catalyst for me today as an artist to somehow regain the feeling. I am not sure if I will ever get to that again but it is something that makes me strive for every day.

To now be apart of alumni of the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers that has recognize amazing talents in the history of our country for 87 years of the likes of Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, John Baldessari, Tom Otterness and others is a complete honor and I am very humbled as both an artist and as an individual. This past June, I had one more memorable moment at Carnegie Hall but this time I was not the one crossing the stage, it was my brother Peter. It was the first time I was able to sit in the seats which before for me were filled with families of recipients cheering and clapping their own blood on and I was able to do that for Peter as an immensely proud brother and supporter; it was an honor to give him the applause he earned and see him achieve his own goals and success in the Awards. Also apart of the ceremony was Baldessari as the key note speaker and he talked about the impact the awards had on him as a young artist and how it was through the recognition of Alliance of Young Artists and Writers that gave him confidence to pursue a career in the arts.

It has been an incredible ride and one I will miss through the program for both my brother and myself; 7 years straight of being nationally recognized by the Alliance and now as alumni we hope to take from the inspiration and desire it has provided us as artists to create new work every day of our lives.

Justin Mortimer

I recently had an opportunity to see Justin Mortimer's solo show "Haftling" at Mihai Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles. Mortimer, personally, had the gallery opened up for me and fellow students to see, along with a lecture about his work. It was absolutely incredible, Justin has a gracious hoist and was very thorough on his process, concepts, and reasoning for his depictions. It is often rare, someone of his stature, to explain their work and I was very grateful for Justin doing so.

I have been a fan of Justin's work for some time, but being able to see the work in person and hearing his thoughts does the photos online no justice. I highly encourage anyone who is in the area to visit the show if possible. Its the first time Justin has shown on the West Coast and the show is up till May 7th.

Preview of a new watercolor piece.

This is a new piece I am currently working on- I am currently taking an opaque & transparent watercolor class, and already 4 weeks in I have fallen in love with this medium and process. I think the best part is that the brushes don't take an 1 hour to clean.

It's funny and ironic at the same time, I used to have a strong dislike towards the medium until I forced myself to try it this semester, I was the same way in high school about ceramics and sculpture and look where that took me..

Many late nights in the studio already, but with this piece and several I have planned afterwards I have been passionately refreshed and energized about my work. More to come.

Weekend with the Masters

Two weeks ago, I was so fortunate to be involved with the Weekend of the Masters. It was an incredible couple of days for me, being able to network with so many great artists and being able to see several demos by these fantastic masters. I was able to see David Leffel's still life demonstration, Richard Schmid's demo, the "duel" between Scott Burdick and Daniel Gerhartz, along with hearing the main lecture with the panel of artists discussing the topic "Technology: A Hinderance or Help to the Traditional Artist".

Some of the artists I was able to meet and talk with were Richard Schmid, Nancy Guzik, Tony Ryder, Scott Burdick, Susan Lyon, Quang Ho, Molly Schmid, Ron Hicks, Clayton J. Beck III, Peter Adams, Daniel Keys, Daniel F. Gerhartz, and Stephen Scott Young. Unbelievable group of artists, it was so great to talk to them and get their take on my work.

Many of the artists participating were from the Chicago area and studied at the American Academy of Art with my mentor, John Tylk, who I studied 12 years under before going to LCAD. It was such a "small world" experience for me, connecting and having history with alot of artists I had never meet before. John also painting alongside many of them at the Palette and Chisel and worked alongside Richard Schmid. To meet John's classmates and fellow artists along with Richard was incredible.

Richard Schmid also came to my school, LCAD, for a book signing and afterwards I gave him a tour of the campus along with having the opportunity to get his feedback on my work. An unbelievable experience, getting insight on my work from one of the living masters today!

An unforgettable week, one I will always remember. It was so inspiring seeing all these artists and hearing and seeing their process. I am so motivated after attending that conference, and have brought that energy back into my studio. I look forward to participating in next year's events and continuing to stay in touch with this group of artists.

New Semester, New Work, New Slate

First week back to classes for my 5th semester at LCAD (currently a first semester Junior) and already things have been busy and plying up. I can't believe the experience is already at the half way mark but two more years to go. I am finally taking alot of my major classes this semester, Illustrative Painting, Graphic Illustration and Comic Book/Graphic Illustration. However, I still will be getting my fine art classes in, taking Figure Painting 3 with Sergio Sanchez and of course Advance Sculpture.

I am really excited about Sergio Sanchez's color theory in figure painting 3, he deals primarily with color and light and how it directly effects painting. Already the class has been eye opening and is everything I expected and more! I am very happy to be working under Sergio this semester.

In Advance Sculpture, I will be doing a double figure composition, half life scale and will be working on the project the whole semester-16 weeks. I am really excited about this piece and hopefully will be molding and casting it also.

I recently spoke with an audience regarding my experience with the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers, with which I would like to share with you.

"Carnegie"

2,800 seats, medals clinging back and forward, the bright incandescent lights on your shoulders, an applause that won’t stop clapping and being where legends stood before you. This is Carnegie. This is the moment I felt validated as an artist and knew the direction of where I wanted to go.

In my freshman year, I completed a twice life size portrait in graphite as part of the drawing 2 class at Lincoln Way East. After finishing the piece, Mr Sandoval, my art teacher, wanted to submit the piece to a competition called Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. As I would later find out, at the high school level for art, there is no conference, no rallies or state like there are for football and basketball. However, we have the Art & Writing Awards, which competes regionally and nationally.

5,000 pieces are submitted in January every year to the regional affiliate, from which only 500 are selected for the exhibition. From that 500, certificates are awarded-Silver Keys, Gold Keys, and American Visions. If awarded a Gold key or higher, your work is eligible for the national competition in New York. My piece entitled “Ashley” was awarded a Gold Key in the show in 2005 and was then submitted to New York. For the National Competition, all the Gold keys and American Visions from around the country are sent to the big Apple for judging. Only 1200 are recipients of national awards each year.

Weeks turned into months since the regional show in January and still no word from New York- with every day passing adding more suspense and anxiety on the results, waiting for that package in the mail. Then, in May of 2005 I finally received a letter. It said I was awarded a National Silver Medal for my drawing and stated in June there would be a ceremony in New York at Carnegie Hall to receive my medal. My father and I immediately planned a trip to go out there for the events.

The opening scene I described was what I felt and the sound I heard from behind stage. Every one of us walked across that stage and took a bow as the ceremony opened up. It was incredible, the honor of being selected, the fulfillment of your work in not just your heart, but in others as well and being in a theatre with incredible artists.

Never have I felt or experienced anything like that prior and as soon as the events were over, I was determined to be back there the next year. I would go on to win National Awards every year following 2005 in high school, but I can honestly say being on stage that first year motivated me to keep getting there. I wanted nothing more than to compete and participate in the Awards as long as I could. In my senior year of 2008, I would go on to submit a body of work, 8 pieces to the Art & Writing awards to compete for their highest, most prestigious award- National Portfolio Gold. The Art & Writing awards only select 5 artists in the nation, who receive $10,000 scholarships.

5,600 eyes on you, walking out to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, the weight of one more medal over your head, and taking in that final applause.

Portfolio Gold, I did it! Practice does get you to Carnegie!

Drapery on Lifesize Standing Figure

This is an additional armature needed for the next stage on my life-size standing figure. I had to tear apart several parts of the sculpture to hit the rebar to attach the wire to. This part of the sculpture took a good amount of time, trying to grab onto the rebar without seeing it and then tying heavy gauge wire (chain link fence thickness) to. Like fishing in the dark lol.

After I got my anchors in- one from the head, one from the elbow, one in the abdominal, two on the back, one on the buttocks and another on the thigh, I was able to attach the wire mesh for the bulk of the armature. For the wire mesh, I used chicken wire and reinforced it with 19 gauge wire to the heavy wire.

It was a total experiment using the chicken wire, but actually worked pretty good. From there, I shaped the chicken wire to the mass forms of the drapery and then screwed it down to the base of the sculpture. This stage alone took a good 10-12 hours doing the armature for the drapery. I did most of this outside of class, so I would not lose too much model time.

After finishing the armature, the fun began with finally working with the drapery. However, packing in the clay was time consuming as well and had to be done in order for this sculpt to last long enough to mold and cast. I did run into a couple problems there with the chicken wire, while I was packing in the clay but I was able to work around those.

The whole process of this sculpture has been a great learning experience and by adding the drapery to this brought some fresh light to the figure. It also reminded me of how not too ever get too attached to your work, once you have developed the skills on how to draw/paint/sculpt something, you will always know how to do it and you will most likely do a better job on it the second time around.

So far about another 150-200 pounds have been added to the figure with the drapery, so it is on the upwards of 500 pounds at this point... More updates to come

Ecorche Update

This is a progress check on my ecorche sculpt. A lot of the bulk of the clay has been put it on both sides of the figure. The left side(skeleton) will have deep muscles as well so the transition between the halves of the body is not so severe. 5 more weeks left.

The first stage, the wire armature, of a piece for my sculptural anatomy class. Studying under sculptor, Raymond Persinger, this project has been in the talks for a couple of semesters, and now I finally have an opportunity to do it.

This armature was very time consuming, almost took as much time as the armature for my life size figure, taking a span of four classes to design and complete. However, I know this time was not lost spending this much into this stage, as I have said in previous posts- the armature is the most important part of any sculpture. If you have a flawed armature it wont matter how good a sculpt you have, you will be constantly fighting problems.

The scale is a half size male figure, contrapposto pose with the right arm holding a cane. Working with plastilina oil clay, this piece I am very excited about. Best way to learn anatomy is to sculpt it. More progress to come.

Here is an update on my lifesize standing figure. I have had 8 sessions on it at this point, this is where the piece stood at the end of last semester. The mass of the sculpture is in, just now to the refinements of the piece, adding/subtracting a little here and there and also working on a unifying finished texture. Details like face, hands and feet will receive the most drastic changes over the next couple of weeks. Also, drapery is being added to the piece as well. The end of this sculpture is almost near, even tho I have 6 more weeks on it at this point- that is not a whole lot of time!

This is the first assignment in my computer imaging class. So far, the class has been very useful to me and I have learned a lot about using Illustrator and vector art. I recently also got a tablet, which I have fallen in love with using. I have learned by using it, a tablet is essential in working digitally.

Don't worry, this doesn't not mean I will be throwing out my brushes and paint. Traditional mediums are still my passion, however, I do see the importance of learning digital art and being universal in different mediums.

Over the last two weeks on my christmas break, I have been working on Alla Prima, french for "painting in one session", portrait sittings. I had models come in and sit for six to seven 25 minutes sessions over the course of 4 hours. I was experimenting with a couple different palettes along with working with different lightening situations. I used this as a way to stay in shape along with getting better painting from life, something I believe no one can do too much off. I am excited for this next semester with new works planned. I am also planning on doing this over the summer again as well.

Update on Kerri Lifesize

The form of figure is finally blocked in with clay. This is our 3 week of sculpting. We used a three inch base on our sculptures and it is so nice having an internal armature. Other wise we would have an external support coming out of the the back to help support Kerri. You can actually see in the background what an external armature looks like, if you look to the left of the images you see a half life size sculpture with a pipe in the back. The pipe is the external armature I am referring to. Without that, we do not have to worry about sculpting around that pipe.

The sculpture are pretty heavy now, we used 8 boxes of clay on each of them, so the sculptures have to be around 250-300 pounds now. We have a total of 4 more class sessions on these this semester, and we are carrying them over to next semester as well. Next semester we will have the first 6 weeks of class to work on them, for a total of 10 more classes on the sculptures.

Life Size Standing Figure

This is the first two stages on my life size sculpture. The rebar is the underlying support to the sculpture itself, without it the clay could not support itself. The material use in this stage is 3/4 inch rebar which we bent to the gesture of the pose. 3/4 inch rebar is extreme thick, so it order to bend most of it, we had to heat it up until it was like butter. Heating up the rebar was the most time consuming part of this process, taking about ten minutes to heat up every joint. Doesn't sound like alot of time, however when there is like 15-20 joints/bends in this, time adds up quickly.

I added extra support to the legs by double up the rebar. Welded the rebar at the feet to plates which we attached to the wooded 24" x 24" base.

The next series of images you see is the butterfly stage. These are extra supports we add to the rebar to hold the clay. A sculptor only gets about 4 inches of unsupported clay before it falls offs. With the butterlies, we try and avoid this happening. Also, 1/8 inch sculpture wire we ran up the arms and legs with loops to create additional support. We ran support wire as well for the forearms instead of using rebar. Shellac the whole piece with two coats to prevent rusting and from here we are ready to sculpt. This process took about a whole month to complete. However, this is most important stage of any sculpture, if you don't have a good underlying structure your sculpture will not work.

This should have been a 7 week pose, however, Nick unfortunately did not show up for two of our sessions. So we should have had 12 more hours to sculpt. This is not the stage where I would like this piece to be at. I was planning on using those two extras sessions to work on refining the surface and put in details such as the face, hands and feet. I am still debating whether I want to finish this from reference or not. I was originally planning on molding and casting it, but since we did not get those extras days it feels incomplete to cast.

This piece was part of my National Gold Portfolio through the Scholastic Alliance of Young Artists and Writers Awards. I did a series of 8 self portraits in pastel depicting me in various scenes, originally observing me in my environment. As the series progressed, the environments became more and more complicated and vital in the description of each scene. Eventually, the series transitions into the city of NY being the backdrop and how I interact with this new setting.

For me, this piece "On the Edge of Transition" was that break from my comfort zone of my own bedroom and pushed the series in a new direction, experimenting with extreme perspective, elements in and out of focus and even the simplicity in this the scene.

My portfolio went on to being selected as one of the top 5 in the nation through the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers Awards in 2008.

This piece just recently came back from Washington D.C last month, it was part of a one year exhibition at the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in the Old Post Office Building.

Hi everyone

I am new to the concept of blogging. So please give me time, the blog page will get better, and I will post images of some of my work soon including recent paintings and sculptures I have been working on.

I have limited, and by limited I am referring to having no skills when putting websites and dealing with code. I am currently working with my webpage designer to get a new fresh site up with my latest work. I apologize to anyone that has been on recently and continues to see my older work.

The "about me" and " exhibitions" pages have been updated on there though, and list some of my recent exhibitions in NY, Chicago and Washington DC. So please be patience, the website will be update shortly but until then I am going to use this blog to list more recent work. I am not a huge fan of doing it this way, but I rather post it on here then not have it posted at all.
